Now that you’re taking this learning challenge, mastering a new language will be a big part of your lifestyle. It is recommended to start planning ahead and prepare for the Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language or Certificazione di Italiano come Lingua Straniera (CILS). Getting this certification will open doors to your new life in Italy!

The CILS exam has no age limit and is differentiated by target audience: Kids, Teens and Adults. The exam is issued and corrected in Italy by the University for foreigners based in Siena, Tuscany, Italy. But you will not need to travel to Italy to take the exam since a number of test venues are available worldwide. The exam happens twice a year, in June and December.

On the exam day, all test venues around the world including the University of Siena will simultaneously administer the exams. You will answer one homogeneous exam within the same rules and regulation, no matter where the location.

Your diploma will be issued by the University of Siena with a worldwide validity and with no expiration date. The exam can be taken for each of the six levels of linguistic and communicative competence identified by the Common European Framework of Reference of the Council of Europe. Depending on the request and use, you can apply from the beginner to the advanced proficiency level (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2).

For each level you will need to succeed in all 5 parts of the exam (writing, reading comprehension, speaking, listening comprehension, syntax and grammar). In case you fail one of the sections, you will have the chance to retake it. This can be done within a time range of 18 months and is only applicable for the exam where you failed.
